TRAUMA & DISSOCIATION

Many people have been exposed to varying degrees of trauma in their lives. Not all traumas need to be severe to impact people and their functioning. Even moderate trauma can adversely affect individuals’ functional status when the trauma has not been processed and released. The Counseling Center of New Smyrna Beach has counselors trained to help you find resolution from trauma and dissociation disorders including:

  • Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

  • Dissociative Identity Disorder

  • Milder Trauma

  • Dissociative Disorders

  • Sexual Abuse

There are different specialty and therapy techniques that have been shown to be effective for treating trauma. The best technique for a particular individual depends on the nature and severity of their trauma, their personal preferences, and the therapist's expertise. At the Counseling Center of New Smyrna Beach we have counselors who are trained in treating trauma. Some of the most commonly used therapy techniques for trauma are:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is a form of talk therapy that focuses on identifying and changing negative thoughts and behaviors. CBT has been shown to be effective for treating a wide range of mental health conditions, including PTSD and trauma-related disorders.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): EMDR is a form of therapy that uses rapid eye movements or bilateral stimulation to help individuals process traumatic memories. EMDR has been shown to be particularly effective for treating PTSD.

Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE): PE is a type of therapy that involves gradually confronting and processing traumatic memories in a safe and controlled environment. PE has been shown to be effective for treating PTSD and trauma-related disorders.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): DBT is a form of therapy that combines elements of CBT with mindfulness and acceptance-based strategies. DBT has been shown to be effective for treating a range of mental health conditions, including PTSD and trauma-related disorders.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT): TF-CBT is a form of CBT that has been specifically designed for children and adolescents who have experienced trauma. TF-CBT involves working with the child and their family to help them process traumatic memories and develop coping skills.

It's worth noting that therapy is a highly individualized process, and what works best for one person may not work for another. It's important to work with your therapist to help you find the best approach for your needs.
